In his latest edition, Oliver names Cullen's Diana Madeline Cabernet blend from 2009 as his Wine of the Year. Cullen becomes the first producer ever to receive this award twice - the first occasion being for its 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot.
Oliver rates wine hard but fair, using a wide range of scores, and he's not afraid to ruffle feathers if that's what's needed to be honest to his audience. He was personally responsible for tasting and evaluating each of many thousands of wines needed to update this guide. In this latest edition he directly links the scale of the Australian wine show system with the inability of most of this country's producers to penetrate the lists and shelves of high-profile restaurants and retailers in key overseas markets.
Oliver also contends that Australia tends to produce wine for its own specific taste, rather than for the expectations of international markets. He calls for the removal of vineyards that are only able to make bulk wine whose very export diminishes the reputation of Australian wine, for winemakers to return fruit flavour to chardonnay and discusses the issue that most winemakers are unable to identify bushfire taint in their own wines.
